All That We Can Be

Dear reader

I don’t like today’s prompt. I don’t like Emily Dickinson. I don’t like creating a poem out of someone else’s work. And yet, that is what we had to do today for #NaPoWriMo. And so, because I have promised myself to write every day this month, I worked hard at this. Let me be clear, dear reader. I don’t like this poem that I wrote. But it is sure better than the first one I did. So, please pass your own judgement on my work. I am sure Emily would roll over in her grave if she could read such drivel.  Rest in Peace, Emily….I will leave you alone now.

Fame is a bee.
It has a song—
It has a sting—
Ah, too, it has a wing.

Emily Dickinson

Fame is fleeting,
I’ve never experienced it,
although I once sang a song.

Fame has a sting,
or rather,
the journey to fame
hurts.

For on a wing
and a prayer
we want to be
all that we
can be.

  2. I completely understand your take on the prompt. I hate the idea of taking someone else's poem and trying to change it to make it my own. I tried, I tried, and I always came short of something satisfying. In the end I gave up entirely on the prompt and wrote something completely different :-)

Good on you for trying though. And being brave enough to share your poem with us! I really like your last verse.
