It's Not What It Seems

Good morning dear reader,

Today is the start of NaPoWriMo. Our prompt this morning is to write a poem describing something in terms of what it is not. I feel that I have captured this prompt beautifully, and anyone who lives in the same area I do will most likely agree. Please enjoy!

Morning dawned,
a new spring day
arose from night’s
comforting embrace.

Ah, spring.
Our sun is heating us
more and more
while winter’s dark doldrums
pass into obscurity.

Sounds of nature awakening
should be coming through
the bedroom window.
Chirping birds,
children playing.

And then....

And then I looked
out.

A howling gale
beat relentlessly
against my windows.
Flakes of snow stuck
to my sidewalks.

It looked cold.
It seemed cold.
It is cold.

Spring has sprung,
but it’s kiss is frigid.
It seems to be a good day
to stay in bed.

  1. Yes - your last verse definitely made me want to snuggle in blankets!

  2. Fantastic! You may not have meant it to leave a smile on my face but it did. Because I woke up this morning, after having spent the day before in short sleeves and doing yard work, to a grey wet chilly day. Good job Rod!

  3. How apt an observation. I have even experienced this myself. Well done.

  4. I like that, especially the line "Its kiss is frigid." Thanks!

  5. I love this, well done!
And it makes me want to write too... maybe I'll join you, though I fear that I could never write as beautifully as you on what something is not, so I'll get on the second day prompt I think :-)
